My version of homemade sloppy joe made with V-8 juice that doubles as a perfect hot dog chili for your Labor Day cookout!
Chili Burger |
The original recipe for this chili burger comes from a dear woman I have known for twenty plus years. She is the grandmother of my children, her name is Carolyn. She has a
big heart. She still treats me like her daughter, even though I am no longer a part of her family by marriage. I can assure you her meals are as good as her heart is big. She makes this with V-8, hamburger and chili powder. The only real change I made was adding additional spices for a little extra kick. This is a quick and versatile staple for my family. I have always made this in large batches which I then freeze into meal size portions. I can then use it for chili burgers or hot dog chili. Add a little cumin and it becomes a filling for tacos or enchildas. The V-8 juice adds a deeper flavor than using plain tomatoes or tomato juice. The ground beef you can't skimp on for this. You have to use a 90/10, preferably 93/7 if you can. You are throwing everything into the pot and letting it cook together, no draining or you lose all that deep spice flavor. Chili burger is a great alternative to sloppy joe mix or chili from the can and so much tastier. Give it a try this Labor Day weekend!

4 Pounds Hamburger-90/10 or 93/7, don’t
skimp
24 Ounces V-8 Juice
½ Cup Chili Powder
¼ Cup Dried Minced Onion
1 Tablespoon Paprika
1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
1 Tablespoon Seasoning Salt
1 Teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper
Place hamburger and V-8 juice in stock pot on medium low heat on
stove. After mixing hamburger and V-8 together, add all spices, continue
cooking on medium low heat until hamburger is thoroughly cooked. I cook for
about an hour on low heat, at a slow simmer, stirring frequently.
